Dubrovnik to Plitvice Lakes is 473 km and about 6 h 15 from Dubrovnik Airport to Entrance 1 by routed time, rounded up, before stops. No official body publishes a Dubrovnik route; the routed path crosses the Pelješac bridge, joins the A1 motorway and leaves it for the state roads to the park.
A rental car collected in Dubrovnik does not have to come back: one-way drop-off in Zagreb and Zadar was offered on cars in autumn 2026 searches, and the park's D429 approach road comes from the direction of both cities. The car goes back to the drop-off place in the voucher with the fuel level it left with.
Which roads lead from Dubrovnik to Plitvice?
The D8 north from the airport, the Pelješac bridge and its access roads, then the D8 again to the A1 near Ploče. The motorway is open southwards only as far as Ploče and the Karamatići toll station, so everything south of that is state road.
The park authority names two approach roads: state road D429 from the direction of Zagreb and Zadar, and D52 from Otočac on the A1. The D429 passes both main entrances.

How much of the drive is tolled?
The Pelješac bridge is free. The A1 is tolled on the closed system: take a ticket at the entry plaza and pay at the exit by distance and vehicle category, in euros, by card where accepted, or by ENC. Croatia has no vignette.
Keep the ticket. Without a valid entry record at the exit, or with one more than 24 hours old and no proof of the reason, the charge is double the toll for the longest route on that motorway. Tolls are the renter's cost under the rental terms, and an unpaid toll invoiced to the rental company later is taken from the deposit on a car hired at Dubrovnik Airport.
Which Plitvice entrance should I drive to?
The park has two main entrances on the D429, Entrance 1 (Rastovača) and Entrance 2 (Hladovina), about 3 km apart, and an auxiliary entrance, Flora, near Entrance 2. The routed time above is to Entrance 1, the northern one.
Parking is paid at both entrances, settled at payment stalls on the way out. Because the entrances are about 3 km apart, the park recommends planning the visit in advance to choose among its tour programmes.
Is the drive to Plitvice different in winter?
Winter equipment is compulsory on Croatia's designated winter road sections from 15 November to 15 April, whatever the weather: four winter tyres, or summer tyres with at least 4 mm of tread plus snow chains for the driven wheels. From 1 November to 31 March, daytime running lights or dipped headlights are required during the day.
In winter the park's Upper Lakes are usually closed and the Lower Lakes usually open, with the Upper Lakes reopening in early April depending on the weather. Bora winds have closed the A1 between the Sveti Rok and Posedarje junctions on several dates, with closures published by HAK and Hrvatske ceste.
How do rental days work on a long drive?
The minimum chargeable period is 24 hours, and a rental running from one morning to the next afternoon counts as two days. To keep the car longer than booked, the rental agent must be told in advance.
For a return trip, the car comes back to Dubrovnik with the fuel level it left with. For a one-way trip, choose Zadar or Zagreb as the drop-off in the search, and refuel before the drop-off to the level the car left with.
Where can a one-way rental end on the way north?
In Split, about 3 h 40 from the airport, or in Zadar, about 4 h 55; both returned one-way cars from Dubrovnik. The first part of the drive is the route from Dubrovnik to Split over the Pelješac bridge, with no border on the way.
